(BLOOMFIELD) - A Dugger woman was arrested on a warrant accusing her of hitting a child under the age of 14 in the face and on a theft charge.

Police arrested 39-year-old Stacy Jo Bowers, formerly from Linton, over the weekend on a warrant charging her with battery on a child less than 14 years old, a Level 6 felony.

She is also facing a charge of theft, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to Bloomfield police the child had been with Bowers for a weekend visit and on Saturday, Sept. 26, Bower and the child were in the vehicle when Bower allegedly hit the child in the face while she was driving. Police say the child suffered marks and swelling to the lower lip and bright red marks on left side of their face.

The theft charge was filed after police were called to the Linton Walmart on Oct. 6.

Bowers is accused of gathering a cart full of grocery items, loading them in reusable bags and placing them in her cart, pushing the cart through a register aisle where there was no attendant, leaving the cart, making a trip to the restroom, returning back to the cart and then trying to exit the store without paying for the items. She was stopped by store personnel.

According to Linton Police during an interview with Bowers, she admitted that she went to the store with the intention of stealing food.

Collenbaugh reported the retail value of the food items in the cart amounted to $426.07.

In the theft case filed in Greene Superior Court, the court ordered a summons be sent to Bowers commanding her to appear in court for an initial hearing on November 13.

In the battery case, also filed in Greene Superior Court, Bowers was taken into custody by Reserve Officer Jason Wilson of the Linton Police Department and booked into the Greene County Jail at 9:45 p.m. On Saturday.

Her bond was set at $4,000 surety with ten percent allowed. She posted $400 cash and was released later the same night.

She is scheduled to appear in court for an initial hearing in the battery case on Friday.
