Daviess Co. Commissioners Sign Contract To Build New Bridge Over CSX Railroad Tracks On Northeast 15th Street

Last updated on Thursday, October 29, 2015

(DAVIESS CO.) - Daviess County Commissioners have signed off on an interlocal agreement with the city of Washington to work together to get a new bridge built over the CSX Railroad tracks on Northeast 15th Street.

The Washington Times Herald reports the agreement call for the city and county to split the costs, seek grants, and utilize Tax Increment Finance funds to get the project done.

County officials say the bridge, which was built around 1900 and last officially updated in the 1940s, is one of the worse shape in the county.

Officials say the new bridge will be higher to make clearance for the double stacks that are 23 feet tall. The bridge now is about 19 feet 11 inches, so it will be raised about 4 feet. There will also be a pedestrian walkway on the bridge. The bridge currently has a 5-ton limit, when complete that will increase.

Officials are projecting an increase in train traffic in the near future making the overpass increasingly important for emergency vehicles and responders.

Officials hope construction will begin in two years with completion within three years. It will take that long because of permits required dealing with CSX railroad.
