Catey Reeves Named Director Of Teen Center

Last updated on Monday, October 5, 2015

(BEDFORD) - Catey Reeves has been named Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence County Teen Center.

The Teen Center or "The Club" as the teens call it, was opened last spring in the former Thornton Memorial Boys Club at the corner of 16th Street and Brian Lane Way.

Reeves is a graduate of Indiana University and Bedford North Lawrence High School and took the position on September 22.

The cafe-style club offers development programs called Passport to Manhood, for the boys and SMART Girls, for the girls along with daily daily tutoring, healthy snack, Career Launch (teaching skills for future success) and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) workshops.

Fridays are fun days with free pizza, provided by Marco's Pizza which sells the pizza to the club at a discounted price, and activities such as sports tournaments, movie nights and open mic.

Reeve says she plans to recognize a youth who excels in leadership, community service and academics.

Attendance averages about 45 kids a night, and Reeves is hoping to see that increase as older youth discover what the club has to offer.

There are also other activities like computer stations, pool tables, video games and TV.

An annual membership to the Teen Center is $30, but the first 100 teens who sign up now can join for free.

Currently the Teen Center is open Mondays-Thursdays, from 3p.m. till 8 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays, from 3 p.m. till 10 p.m. In November, hours will expand to 9 p.m. through the week and 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

During fall break, Oct. 19-23, the Teen Center will be open from 1 p.m. till 8 p.m. and will have additional activities as well as its usual programming.

On Oct. 20, from 6 p.m. till 7 p.m., parents are invited to a meet and greet the staff, tour the building and hear about the center's activities.

On Oct 24, staff will take a group to Hoosier Hysteria at Indiana University's Assembly Hall (with parental consent) to see the IU basketball teams on their season exhibition/introduction. For more information contact the Teen Center.
