(BLOOMINGTON) - A bystander Wednesday evening subdued a man and held him after the man alleged was involved in a fight in the grocery store parking lot armed with a steel rebar pipe wrapped in a cloth.

The victim, who was not seriously hurt, told police that the man followed him to Kroger on South Old State Road 37 and and then accused him of sexually assaulting his girlfriend three years ago in Indianapolis.

Monroe County Police Department deputies arrived at the store at 6:14 p.m., to a group of people restraining 29-year-old Robert Stanley Irvine of Bloomington.

Irvine was arrested on charges of aggravated battery. His bond was set at $15,000 surety and $500 cash.

Police recovered the cloth-wrapped piece of steel rebar at the scene.

Witnesses told police Irvine had the weapon in the trunk of his vehicle and then aggressively approached the victim in the parking lot, striking him repeatedly.

The victim suffered a contusion on the top of his head and small lacerations to his face.
