Brown County High School To Forfeit Homecoming Win

Last updated on Friday, October 2, 2015

(BROWN CO.) - Brown County High School discovered and reported a paperwork error that will cost them their September 25 homecoming win over Cloverdale High School.

Athletic Director Matt Tuggle became aware of the error this week, but rules say the team is required to forfeit the win.

The error involved a new member of the team transferring to the school from Perry Meridian High School in mid-September. Head Coach Ethan Schreiber added him to the team but did not make sure the player met athletic requirements. Coach Schreiber failed to notify the athletic office prior to the game. That notification is necessary so that the athletic office can complete a formal transfer with the IHSAA and a student's former school. The process is intended to make certain that students do not transfer schools to get around ineligibility related to violations of IHSAA requirements such as a poor academic record.

The school then took steps to notify the Indiana High School Athletics Association, as well as Cloverdale.

Tuggle says the oversight was corrected and the player is now fully eligible to play.

There were no issues that would have prevented the player from being eligible if the paperwork would have been filed.

"In no way, shape or form was this was it the athlete's fault," Tuggle says. "The school has disciplined Coach Schreiber for his mistake. It was an accident. Coach Schreiber did not want to give up this win. People get busy and we make mistakes."
