Last updated on Friday, October 2, 2015

l(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington man was arrested after police say he battered his roommate, chased them out of their apartment and then barricaded himself inside and set the place on fire.

Bloomington Police were called to the 1100 block of West 17th Street just before 9 p.m. Friday night after a report that 19-year-old Logan Schwartz was chasing a man and woman out of the apartment. Police found the two, who had both been battered by Schwartz. Both were taken by ambulance to the hospital where they were treated and released.

When police attempted to talk to Schwartz who was still inside the apartment, Schwartz had taken the couch and blocked the door and set the apartment on fire. Through a window, officer could see Schwartz armed with a sword destroying items.

Residents in a nearby apartment were evacuated and the Bloomington Fire Department was called to the scene.

With the assistance of firefighters, officers were able to breach the door and enter the apartment.

Police ordered Schwartz to drop the sword. He complied and was arrested. Schwartz was arrested on charges of arson, battery and criminal mischief and taken to the Monroe County Jail at 4:23 a.m. Saturday.

Firefighters then quickly extinguished the fire, with the damage being mostly contained to a bedroom.

Police say they still don't know why Schwartz became angry, but did discover Schwartz had been drinking and taking pills prior to the incident.
