(BLOOMFIELD) - The Bloomfield School Board voted to change the 2015/2016 Bloomfield Jr./Sr. High School Athletic Eligibility Language in the Student Handbook.

The Greene County Daily News reports that Superintendent Dan Sichting recommended that the school board approve the following language to read:

"Students in grades 9-12 must pass six classes to participate. At the beginning of each school year, grades will be checked at mid-term, nine weeks and semester. If a student is ineligible, grades will be checked weekly. When a student regains eligibility grades will be checked at the next midterm, nine weeks or semester. He or she will not participate in any contests until he or she regains eligibility.

"The Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) requires student-athletes in a seven period schedule to pass a minimum of five classes to remain eligible for participation in interscholastic athletics. The IHSAA also allows member schools to have more rigorous academic requirements.

Bloomfield Jr./Sr. High School is required to certify grades for the IHSAA at the end of the grading period or semester. If a student athlete is failing three or more classes at the end of grading period or semester, he or she will be ineligible for participation until the end of the next grading period or semester, per IHSAA rules.

"Students in grades 7-8 will have weekly grade checks. If there is an F the student will have a one-week warning period. If the grade does not improve the next week the student will not participate in practices or contests.
"Coaches may have stricter guidelines with approval of the athletic director and principal.

"The Bloomfield Jr./Sr. High School Athletic Director or his/her designee will conduct the athletic eligibility checks.

"A student not completing the current season will not be permitted to begin activities for another sport until released by the coach of the current sport."

The language previously stated that once a student becomes ineligible, they would remain that way until the next midterm, nine weeks or semester. The new wording gives students the opportunity to become eligible when their failing grades have been raised.

This policy affects all students in any extracurricular activity in which contests of any type are conducted.

Board Member Steve Dowden made a motion to approve the language as presented, which was seconded by Board Member Sandy May.

The motion passed with a five to two vote, with Board Members Keven McIntosh and John Combs opposing.
