Last updated on Monday, October 12, 2015

(HURON) - A Bedford man was killed after an accident on U.S. 50 West near Watson Merry Road early Friday morning.

Bedford City Council member Byron Buker says his grandson; John Morgan, who worked at U.S. Gypsum; was on his way to work when the accident happened at 6:34 a.m.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, Morgan was traveling west on U.S. 50 in a 2010 Toyota Camry. At the same time, 41-year-old Lisa Smith of Mitchell was driving east in a 2015 Jeep Wrangler.

Smith told police that the Camry came across the centerline and struck her vehicle head-on. She told police she had no time to avoid the collision.

Morgan, who was wearing a seatbelt, was trapped inside his vehicle.

The Bedford Fire Department extrication team freed Morgan from the car, but he collapsed after being freed.

An Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital ambulance transported Morgan to IU Health Bedford Hospital, where he died from internal injuries.

Smith suffered leg and foot injuries and was transported by an IU Health ambulance to a local hospital.

Morgan's parents are John and Karen Morgan. Karen is Byron Buker's daughter.

Morgan, who was a Eagle Scout, graduated from Bedford North Lawrence High School and studied at Ivy Tech Community College where he earned a degree in criminal justice.

Funeral services for Morgan will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, in the Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary with Pastor John Lane officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Day & Carter Mortuary.
