76th IBEP Bull Sale Saturday, Oct. 17

(BEDFORD) - The 76th performance test of the Indiana Beef Evaluation Program finished September 21 at the Feldun-Purdue Ag Center in Bedford.

A total of 94 bulls from five breeds completed the test. The bulls were entered by 34 seedstock producers from Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio and Wisconsin. Bulls were fed a moderate-energy ration during the 125-day test and daily grain for the entire group was 3.59 pounds. The bulls are in ideal body condition for use this fall or next spring.

This is an excellent set of bulls that offer a range of performance for the economically important traits. Angus Bull 152 will enter the ring first. He had a Performance Index of 112.3 and a Carcass Merit of 126.7, the highest in the sale. HIs EPD's rank him in the top 10 percent of the breed for weaning weight, yearling weight, maternal milk, direct calving ease, carcass weight, marbling and ribeye area, as well as $ Weaned, $ Grid Value and $ Quality Grade indexes. The bull was sired by PA Power Tool 9108 and is owned by Powell Farm, of Worthington, Ind.

Angus bulls from Kiata Farms, in Hamilton, Ohio and Brown Family Farms, of Norman, Ind. sired by Deer Valley All In were the top-indexing get-of-sire group in the test. The two bulls from Kiata Farms are in the sale. Bull 197 had a Performance Index of 117.4 and will the second in the sale ring, while bull 198 had a Performance Index of 111.2 and will the third bull in the ring.

Angus 192 had the highest Performance Index of 128.1. He was sired by Connealy Confidence 0100 and is owned by Kiata Farms and will be 8th in the sale ring. Other excellent bulls selling early include Angus 141 sired by HARB Pendleton 765 JH from Bill Washburn, of Olney, IL; SimAngus 235 sired by GCCR Easy Answer Y108 from Saxe Farm, of Thompsonville, IL.; Angus 190 sired by Gar Composure and 195 sired by Deer Valley ALl IN from Kiata Farms and Angus 148 sired by Gar 5050 New Design 5529 from Small Cattle Farms in Bloomfield, Ind.

Cattle producers looking for bulls that will add pounds, quality and value to their calves will not want to miss this sale on Saturday, Oct. 17 at the Springville Feeder Auction.

Bulls will sell immediately following the Springville Feeder Auction Association's Heifer and Cow sale which starts at 2 p.m.

In addition the sale will be broadcast live over the internet through DVAuction Services. Users with high speed internet access and interested in buying or viewing the sale need to visit www.dvauction.com

If you plan to purchase a bull via the auction site, you need to preregister with DVAuction to establish your financial credentials.

A total of 43 bulls will be offered for sale: 31 Angus, 3 Herford, 1 Red Angus and 8 SimAngus. These bulls were the top indexing bulls of their breed and passed rigorous inspection for breeding and structural soundness. Also all bulls have been measured by ultrasound for ribeye area, backfat and percent intramuscular fat or marbling. In addition EPD's for birth weight, weaning weight, yearling weight, maternal milk, calving ease, disposition, carcass traits and $ index are available to assist producers in bull selection.

Bulls may be seen at the Test Station located at Feldun-Purdue Ag Center, three miles northwest of Bedford on State Road 158.458 or after noon on Oct. 17 at the Springville Feeder Auction. Video clips of all of the sale bulls are available on the IBEP website.
