(BEDFORD) - Two people were arrested Sunday after a canine alerted police to possible drugs in a vehicle.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, an officer stopped a vehicle after the driver failed to stop at a stoplight at Fifth Street and Lincoln Avenue.

While speaking to the driver, a police canine alerted the officer to possible drugs in the back seat of the vehicle.

Sitting in the back seat were 40-year-old David S. Smith and 28-year-old Kelby Root, both of Bedford.

"Officers discovered Smith had a purple container that contained meth and Root had a backpack that contained meth, a smoking pipe with meth residue and marijuana," Parsley says.

Both were arrested. Smith is facing charges of possession of meth. Root was charged with possession of meth, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
