Spencer Man Arrested After Stealing Van, Attempting To Break Into Storage Unit And Battering Witness

(BLOOMINGTON) - A Spencer man faces multiple charges after he allegedly stole a vehicle and fled the scene of a burglary.

Police arrested 20-year-old Jeremy J. New on Thursday on charges of burglary, a level 5 felony; auto theft, a level 6 felony; battery, a Class B misdemeanor; and theft, a Class A misdemeanor.

According to a Bloomington Police Department report, police were called to a burglary in the 1000 block of West Allen Street a little after noon on Thursday. Police say a man had attempted to break into a storage unit, but when he realizing he was being watched by a resident, he beat the man and fled the scene on foot.

During their investigation, police found a red Ford van at the storage unit that had been reported stolen on Wednesday from a home in the 100 block of East Winslow Street.

Police found New later on Thursday and he had the keys to that stolen van in his pocket.

New was arrested and taken to the Monroe County Jail at 5:38 p.m. Bond was set at $10,000 surety, $500 cash. As of Saturday night, he was still in jail.
