(BARTHOLOMEW CO.) - A Jackson County mother is facing child endangerment charges after an early Monday morning crash in Bartholomew County.

According to a Bartholomew County Sheriff's Department report, at approximately 3:13 a.m., police were called to a one-vehicle crash with injuries at U.S. 31 and County Road 900 South.

Upon arrival arrival, the deputy found an SUV resting on its side in a cornfield.

Police say the driver, 35-year-old Rosaberta Mendez Garcia of Seymour, was outside of the vehicle with her four children, all of whom appeared to had been injured.

Mendez Garcia reportedly told the deputy that she was traveling south on U.S. 31 when she reached to get a paper towel for her daughter. Mendez Garcia then reportedly lost control of her vehicle, over-corrected and then left the road. The vehicle then apparently rolled, crashing through a fence and coming to rest in the cornfield.

Mendez Garcia was cited for operating a vehicle without ever receiving a driver's license, as well as child endangerment. She also reportedly received seat belt violations for all three children, who were allegedly riding in the back seat of the SUV without proper child restraints. Mendez Garcia was also cited for not having proof of financial responsibility.

The Sheriff's Department says that all of the children were treated and three were transported for additional medical attention.

They include:

  • A 10-year-old treated at Columbus Regional Hospital for a possible broken wrist;
  • A four-year-old treated and released at the scene;
  • A four-year-old flown by helicopter to Riley Children's Hospital;
  • A four-year-old taken by ambulance to Columbus Regional Hospital, then later transferred to Riley Children's Hospital.

The Sheriff's Department says a report is being forwarded to the Bartholomew County Prosecutor's Office for consideration of further charges.
