Prominent Daviess County Attorney Dies

Last updated on Wednesday, September 2, 2015

(WASHINGTON) - James Havill passed away Friday at the age of 72.

Havill was a well-known Daviess County attorney who at one time partnered with former Daviess Circuit Court Judge Robert Arthur and current Circuit Court Judge Greg Smith.

Havil was born in Indianapolis and moved to Louisville, where he attended Trinity High School. After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Dominican Civil War. He then attended Evansville College where he played football.

He earned his law degree at Indiana University Law School in Indianapolis in 1971 and the next year began a law practice in Washington.

Judge Arthur says Havil was known for being a competitor, both in the courtroom and in sports. He was intense at everything, whether it was in connection with a case or playing golf or gin rummy.
