(ORLEANS) - Open auditions for "Stories Behind the Stones," an event of the Orleans Bicentennial celebration, will be held on Friday and Saturday.

Historic individuals from the town's past will come alive for two nights in October, portrayed by costumed locals who will relate stories of their characters' lives. Each actor will have a 2- to 6-minute monologue to conduct, based on careful research of each character being portrayed.

"From war heroes to politicians, pioneers, doctors, teacher, merchants and business owners, Orleans encompasses the final resting places of a number of notables who impacted the storylines of our hometown, state, and even the nation," noted Robert F. Henderson, Orleans 200 Chairperson and the Town's Clerk-Treasurer. "This event is a way in which we can all enjoy seeing these people seem more alive."

Auditions will be held for the following roles:

  • General Spicely
  • Roscoe and Lucy Jenkins
  • Gov. Ed Jackson and his wife, Lydia
  • Dr. Henry Lingle
  • Elizabeth Shindler Stetson
  • John J. Lingle
  • John and Margaret Ochs
  • John Steers, Sr
  • John Steers, Jr
  • Fred Kimbley
  • James Blalock, the "Greatest Man in the World"

These are unpaid, volunteer roles, as the event is for the pleasure and enjoyment of bicentennial celebrants and a fund-raising activity to help defray the costs involved in the bicentennial celebration.

All auditions will be held at the Orleans Town Hall community room, on Friday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon.
