(BLOOMINGTON) - Police arrested a homeless man after he allegedly broke into a home of four young women.

According to Bloomington Police Capt. Joe Qualters, the incident happened just after 10:33 p.m. Wednesday.

Police say 30-year-old Gene Berry, who police say is homeless, was arrested after he allegedly crawled through an unlocked window at a home in the 1500 block of North Lincoln Street, just west of Memorial Stadium.

The women told police that the man told them not to move as they ran to a neighbor for help. The man followed them and asked them for his backpack that he had left inside.

The women between 19 and 22-years-old reported that the man then fled north on Lincoln Avenue.

Police, who were familiar with Berry, went to his mother's house on East 20th Street. She told police she had not seen her son. Police found him outside of her house. He ran when he saw police.

A downtown resource officer encountered Berry on Thursday afternoon and took him to the police station for questioning. Berry told police that he was downtown all night Wednesday and denied breaking into the women's home.

He was arrested on a preliminary felony charge of residential entry. He is being held without because he is also wanted on a warrant for a probation violation.
