(BLOOMINGTON) - A Bloomington man was arrested after Bloomington Police received a complaint of a man with a flashlight peering through patio doors early Tuesday morning.

When police arrived to the 700 block of West Gourley Pike officers found a man wearing dark clothing with a flashlight standing behind an apartment building on Amaryliss Drive.

According to Bloomington Police Capt. Joe Qualters, 21-year-old Matthew Sechrist took off running. Officers found him hiding under a car at Colonial Crest Apartments in the 700 block of West Gourley Pike. Sechrist then asked police to tell his girlfriend he was going to jail.

Officers then went to an apartment of Sechrist's girlfriend's mother, where he had been living four or five nights a week. The girlfriend's mother gave police permission to search the apartment. Capt. Qualters says that police found a television, video game system, stereo equipment in the living room and computers and other electronics in a closet and a backpack full of laptops.

Sechrist admitted to being involved in at least 10 burglaries at Colonial Crest and Hoosier Court apartment complexes, from August 8 till the time of his arrest. Qualters says Sechrist admitted to doing the burglaries to support his meth addiction.

Sechrist was arrested on charges of burglary, theft, resisting law enforcement and on a probation violation.

Sgt. Qualters say police are now trying to match the recovered stolen property with the rightful owners. Those who have items stolen from Colonial Crest or Hoosier Court apartments are asked to contact Bloomington police Detective Scott Reynolds at (812) 339-4477.
