(ORANGE CO.) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating after a Borden man fell from his tree stand while setting it up Saturday morning.
Police say 44-year-old Stephen Welp suffered a broken femur after falling approximately 12 feet to the ground while on the Patoka Reservoir property.
According to police, shortly before 11 a.m., Welp was attempting to erect a 12' ladder stand by himself for the upcoming deer hunting season. As he was affixing the stand to the tree, a strap loosened, and the stand fell as Welp clung to the platform. Welp was not wearing a safety harness at the time of the incident.
Multiple responders transported Weldon from the woods to a conservation officer's boat, and he was subsequently transported by ambulance to the hospital.
Assisting agencies at the scene included Orange County Rural District 1 and French Lick Volunteer Fire Departments, as well as IU Health Ambulance
Indiana Conservation Officers strongly encourage hunters to routinely inspect all tree stands, straps and equipment, in addition to properly wearing a safety harness when hunting from or erecting an elevated stand.
