Grant Will Help Pay For ADA Improvements At Daviess County Courthouse

Last updated on Wednesday, September 9, 2015

(DAVIESS CO.) - People visiting the Daviess County Courthouse will be dodging more construction in the near future.

The Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs has awarded a $400,000 Public Facilities Program grant to make ADA accessibility improvements to the Daviess County Courthouse. The $400,000 grant will require Daviess County to put up a 20 percent match. The award was the maximum offered by OCRA on this round of funding.

Daviess County Commissioner President Michael Taylor says the grant will make the courthouse more accessible to those with disabilities.

The plans is to build a new entrance on the east side of the courthouse that is handicapped accessible, updating the restrooms, changing the controls on the elevator and changes to signage and curbs.

Officials hope to begin the bidding process soon, with the bulk of the work done in the Spring of 2016.

The ADA project is one of several construction projects officials are looking at. Earlier this summer the county received a grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to fix the greenhouse and skylight. The county has also did a space study that found the county is short of office space. Officials are discussing options with consultants on possible options for a solution.
