Former Washington Mayor Dies After Battle With Cancer

(WASHINGTON) - Dave Abel, who led the city of Washington as mayor on two separate occasions, died Monday.

Abel had been fighting cancer for several years.

Abel took his first term in office from 1984 to 1988. He was the first Republican to be elected mayor of Washington in decades. Abel went into private business, opening an insurance agency in the community after losing to Tom Baumert in 1988. He would defeat Baumert and re-capture the Mayor's Office in 2004.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Gill Funeral Home.
