(BEDFORD) - Bedford Fire Department firefighters battled a blaze at the home of Danny "Bones" Spires Monday night.

According to Bedford Fire Department Chief Jon Wagner, when firefighters arrived at 9:31 p.m. the southeast portion of the house was engulfed in flames.

Wagner says the house "was fully involved with heavy flames and smoke."

Firefighters quickly began dousing the exterior of the home.

"Smoke was coming out of the attic area and the eves," Wagner added. "Once they got the flames on the outside of the home knocked down they then battled the blaze from the inside, which is always a dangerous situation."

Firefighters had to pull down part of the ceiling to get to the fire.

"They had it under control in just a few minutes," Wagner says.

There was extensive damage to the attic area and the southeast bedroom where the bulk of the fire was.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but BFD Investigator Brent Allen believes the fire was electrical in nature.

"He will know more today after he can get in there during daylight hours and double check some things," Wagner says.

One firefighter did suffer from heat exposure. He was checked out by the Seals ambulance crew that was on the scene.

"Michael Davis got a little over heated," Wagner says. "We got him out of his gear, placed him in the fire engine with the air conditioner on and got him something to drink. He was back to duty in just a short time."

Firefighters left the scene at 12:30 a.m. this morning, but returned at 3:41 a.m. to check on the structure.

"That is when we found the fire was burning where the roofs came together," Wagner says. "The men took care of that and left around 5 a.m."

The American Red Cross was also called to the scene and provided the family with housing.
