Equestrian Users Who Visit Hoosier National Forest May Want To Bring Water For Their Horses

Last updated on Friday, September 4, 2015

(HOOSIER NATIONAL FOREST) - Equestrian users who visit the Hoosier National Forest during Labor Day weekend through this fall may want to prepare to bring water for their animals.

"Some of the tanks at the horse camps have been recently filled, but how long that lasts will depend on how much use we get over the holiday," says Forest Recreation Program Manager, Vicki Gullang-Harris.

The tanks can't be refilled due to the transfer of Forest funds to the western firefighting effort. Visitors may encounter other impacts from the transfer of funds such as grass not being mowed as supplies of fuel and oil for equipment is depleted.

District Ranger Chris Zimmer added, "We hope all of our visitors and users will understand and be patient during this time. We are making the best of the situation." All spending has been suspended on the Hoosier National Forest until the beginning of the 2016 fiscal year which begins on October 1.

The Hoosier operates five horse camps that cater to equestrian users. German Ridge and Youngs Creek Horse Camps are located on the Tell City Ranger District while Blackwell, Hickory Ridge and Shirley Creek are on the Brownstown Ranger District. All five camps are located along trail systems. Horseback riders must have a trail tag to use the trail system and there are over 202 miles of trails available to horse use on the Hoosier.
