(SALEM) - The Depot railroad museum’s featured attraction, a 14- by 54-foot model of Monon trains operating through Salem, Pekin and Campbellsburg, continues to grow.
Two Depot volunteers, Andy Long of Depauw and John Campbell from Louisville, are concentrating on the construction of houses along South Mill Street between Market and King streets. A number of houses in that area are being added and should be ready for viewing during Old Settlers' Days Saturday and Sunday.
The Depot will open at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Noon on Sunday. Most of the Old Settlers' Day activities take place on the grounds of the John Hay Center in downtown Salem.
The HO scale model railroad depicts Washington County as it was 60 years ago. Every building is an exact replica of buildings that existed between 1957 and 1964.
Visitors can view four Monon trains -- two freight and two passenger trains -- as they wind their way through the county's detailed landscape.
Construction on the model has been ongoing for 14 years. Volunteers add to it every week.
The model, which fills most of the basement train room, is just one of many attractions being offered at The Depot and John Hay Center during Old Settlers' Day.
Tours of The Depot's 1929 Monon caboose will be conducted by Larry Shrum.
The Depot Diner will offer a varied menu including sloppy joes, pork barbecue, chips and homemade desserts. Water, assorted soft drinks and coffee also will be available.
The Depot's gift shop offers a variety of railroad-related gifts. Also, as part of the gift shop operation, bargain tables will offer railroad books and video tapes.
The Depot's platform will serve as a stage both days for performances by local musicians and presenters.
