(BEDFORD) - The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says the chances of a driver hitting a deer are on the rise.
For the second year in a row, the odds of hitting a deer in Indiana has risen by more than 20 percent.
Most of those accidents are in fall, when deer go into rut or their breeding season.
DNR officials say their biggest management tool to balance the deer population is hunting.
The DNR bases its deer season on harvest trends, and one of the factors officials look at are deer-vehicle collisions. The state also has several deer reduction zones that allow hunters to harvest deer in defined urban areas.
The reduction zones can be moved around to account for dips or swells in the deer population in those areas. Indiana's reduction zone season runs from September 15 through January of next year.
