(BEDFORD) - Citizens have had mixed feelings about the 102, 16-foot-tall, teardrop lights that Duke Energy installed along John Williams Boulevard.
Many questioned the spacing of the lights, saying they are too close together.
Bedford Street Commissioner Dan Kirk explained that the lights are intended to illuminate the area for pedestrian use.
The city partnered with Duke Energy who use a photometric analysis, which determines precisely where to install lighting equipment and exactly how much power each light will need to do its job.
In this case, the photometric analysis was used to determine the spacing for pedestrians to be able to use the sidewalks in a safe manner with the intention of eliminating gaps in between.
The new lighting uses low voltage, LED bulbs to put out a soft light for safety.
The Bedford Redevelopment Commission paid for the lights that Duke Energy installed along John Williams Boulevard.
That saved the city $207,807 and freed up street department money that would have been used for the lights to do other street work.
The RDC had about $133,000 left from a bond that was issued to build Becky Skillman Way and used that money to pay for the lights. Those funds were required to be spent TIF district (Tax Increment Financing), which includes John Williams Boulevard.
