Chinese Student Population Growing At Indiana University

Last updated on Thursday, September 3, 2015

(BLOOMINGTON) - Chinese students comprise nearly 36 percent of all international students at Indiana University.

The more recent data from the university shows 3,100 Chinese students were enrolled on the Bloomington campus in 2014.

Of the 8,700 international students, South Korea was second in the number of students on campus with 814, followed by India with 713.

The Herald-Times analyzed 20 years of data on international students at IU and found South Koreans were the largest group from 1995 to 2009.

The Chinese student population rose significantly after Michael McRobbie became school president in 2007, increasing more than 23 percent that year.

International admissions director John Wilkerson says the number of Chinese students at IU is a reflection of a national trend.
