Bicyclist Injured After Being Struck By Vehicle

Last updated on Thursday, September 3, 2015

(BEDFORD) - A bicyclist was injured when he peddled in front of a vehicle at the intersection of John Williams Boulevard and R Street, Wednesday afternoon.

According to a Bedford Police report, 76-year-old Floyd Yates of Bedford was traveling south on R Street and stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of John Williams Boulevard and R Street.

He told police he pulled his 2000 Lincoln Town Car past the crosswalk so he could see better to the east before he pulled through the intersection.

That is when Yates says "from out of nowhere" a bicyclist appeared in front of him from the west. Yates struck 41-year-old Joseph Bates of Bedford, knocking him off the bike.

Police say evidence at the scene shows that Bates was traveling east on the north side of John Williams Boulevard and then traveled westbound from the sidewalk around the vehicle without ever coming to a stop prior to entering the crosswalk so Yates never saw the cyclist.

Bates who complained of pain to his lower arm was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Dunn Hospital for treatment.
