Vectren Energy Installing Automated Meters

Last updated on Thursday, August 20, 2015

(UNDATED) - In an effort that is expected to improve efficiency by 20 times, Vectren Energy will be installing automated meter reading technology to its service customers’ existing meters throughout Indiana and Ohio this month and wrapping up in 2018.

The upgrade will feature an encoder receiver transmitter, which allows workers to gather meter readings for normal monthly billing from a nearby vehicle or from the curb using a low-powered radio frequency.

When completed, AMR will enable Vectren to obtain as many as 10,000 actual reads in a single route, compared to an average of 500 reads recorded per daily walking route.

AMR will reduce the number of estimated meter reads and is more convenient for customers who have traditionally had to provide the utility with access to inside meters or those behind locked gates.

Once deployed, these devices will result in more efficient and cost-effective meter reads.

Look for communication on your Vectren bill as to when those improvements will be done in your area.
