(MITCHELL) - An Orleans man was arrested after he allegedly was uncooperative with police and swallowed a pill while being arrested.

Jackie Harris was arrested after a Lawrence County Police officer witnessed a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Meridian Road and Doc Hamilton Boulevard in Mitchell.

LCPD Officer Riley Hitchcock stopped the vehicle at West Hancock Avenue.

According to Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham, the passenger of that vehicle, Jackie Harris, was wanted on a warrant and was asked to step out of the vehicle.

When Harris got out of the vehicle a pill fell from his lap and onto the ground.

Officer Hitchcock picked up the pill and placed it on the hood of his patrol car to identify, and placed Harris in handcuffs behind his back.

While Officer Hitchcock was attempting to pat down Mr. Harris before placing him in his patrol car, Harris leaned over and placed his mouth over the pill on the hood of the car and attempted to swallow it.

Officer Hitchcock attempted to prevent Harris from swallowing the pill and destroying evidence.

"Mr. Harris then began resisting Officer Hitchcock's lawful commands and Mr. Harris bit the finger of Officer Hitchcock," says Sheriff Branham. "Mr. Harris swallowed the pill and was taken to the emergency room to be medically cleared prior to transport to jail. The pill that Mr. Harris swallowed was a schedule IV controlled substance for which he did not have a prescription"

The driver, 65-year-old Timothy Love of Minot, was arrested on two warrants for failure to appear. He was arrested without incident.

Harris is facing charges of battery, obstruction of justice, resisting arrest by force, and on a warrant for petition to revoke probation.
