(BLOOMINGTON) - A judge will allow the 20-year-old son of rock star John Mellencamp to serve a four-day jail sentence in 12-hour stints because he suffers from a panic disorder.
"This is the best way to meet his obligation without introducing too many trigger events that could cause one to occur," explains Thomas Farlow, Speck Mellencamp's attorney.
Mellencamp will never spend a night in jail during his sentence during his time. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor battery charge stemming from a July 2013 fight in Bloomington. The charge was reduced from a felony.
Speck's attorney says this is in the best interest for his health and there's special treatment involved.
"It's actually a greater penalty than if they would just do it all four days at once. He has to report eight different times," explains Farlow.
Farlow explained it is not unusual for people to serve their time in non-consecutive days.
The Mellencamps politely declined when asked if they wanted to comment on the situation.
