(LINTON) - The Linton Police Department's Sixth Annual National Night Out is tonight from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Linton's Humphreys Park.

National Night Out is a free event to the public where law enforcement departments and vendors will be giving away a lot of free items in order to strengthen community relationships with law enforcement.

The event is made possible by donations and fundraising that the Linton Police Department does throughout the year.

Chief Tony Jerrell says the department has purchased more than $1,200 worth of gifts and prizes.

The National Night Out program has been active in the United States for the past 31 years. The event was created in an effort to bring communities together with the thought that a connected neighborhood is a safer neighborhood.

"A lot of times as police or firefighters, we are dealing in a stressful situation, and this is one time for the community to come out and to get to know their local police, fire and EMS personnel," Jerrell says.

Law enforcement agencies that will be participating include the Linton Police Department, Jasonville Police Department, Bloomfield Police Department, Greene County Sheriff's Department, Indiana Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers and many more plus area fire departments and emergency responders.
