Petition To Authorize Bond For New Ellettsville Town Hall

Last updated on Thursday, August 13, 2015

(ELLETTSVILLE) - Ellettsville residents will have the opportunity to signal their support for the construction of a new town hall.

During the town council meeting on Monday, council members unanimously agreed to begin circulating a petition to taxpayers that would authorize a $2 million bond to construct the new town hall. Town Clerk-Treasurer Sandy Hash says 50 signatures in favor are needed to proceed.

Town officials moved out of the previous town hall, located at the corner of Sale Street and Ind. 46, after flooding caused extensive damage in 2013. Since that time, officials of several departments such as utilities, town planning and the clerk-treasurer's office have been carrying out their operations at temporary locations.

The new town hall is expected to be located on Temperance Street behind the police station. Earlier this year the town purchased the 48-acre property for $500,000 by borrowing money from the utilities department's budget. Officials say that money will be reimbursed when the bond is sold. The tentative completion date is January 2017.
