(BLOOMINGTON) - Monroe County's commissioners are seeking a pay raise that's well above what the county's council has recommended for its elected officials.

The Herald-Times reports that preliminary budget documents from the county auditor's office show the three commissioners are seeking an $11,000 pay increase that would boost their 2016 salaries about 34 percent. That's well above the $500 cost of living adjustment the county council recommended for elected officials.

But Commissioner Julie Thomas says the commissioners will actually ask the county council to approve a $40,000 salary for two commissioners and a $42,000 salary for the president. That would represent increases of roughly 23 and 24.5 percent, respectively.

Commissioner Patrick Stoffers says increasing the salaries would bring the commissioners' pay closer to the average of commissioners in "peer" counties.
