Monroe Community School Corp. Parents Not Happy With School Start Date

(BLOOMINGTON) - Students in the Monroe County Community School Corp. are coming back from summer break earlier. Their first day was Monday.

The Herald Times reports that administrators say the change is consistent with other school corporations throughout the state, but parents feel the committee that made calendar recommendations to the board ignored their concerns.

According to officials, students now have more breaks during the fall semester than in the past. Thanksgiving break is a full week, and so is fall break. Students have to be in school for 180 days, so longer breaks push the start date up.

The survey lists several reasons to push the start of school back into late August:

  • August is typically a warmer month than May and June, so bringing students back earlier will drive air conditioning costs up.
  • It affects traditional summer businesses such as pools and ice cream parlors, where teenagers are both customers and employees.
  • Summer break ending in early August also affects people associated with Indiana University. Those with international families travel during August so the early start time affects the recruitment of a top professor.
