(LOOGOOTEE) - Members of the Martin County Humane Society have asked the Loogootee City Council for financial assistance to run the animal shelter.

The Martin County Council gave the society $4800 annually. The city has yet to help the shelter.

Josh Hughett, president of the society, and his wife Courtney, who is secretary-treasurer for the organization, asked the city for $2,000 to purchase a stainless steel cage that would house six cats.

According to shelter records, about half of the animals brought into the shelter come from within the city limits of Loogootee.

City Council members will consider the request during their Sept. 14 meeting.

The shelter on North Oak Street was built two years ago on land leased from the city for a $1 a year. The cost of the building was $40,000 and paid for through donations. The shelter staff consists completely of volunteers. During 2014, nearly 2,000 volunteer hours were put in collectively by 56 people.
