Lawrence County Sgt. To Receive Commendation For Life-Saving Efforts

Last updated on Tuesday, August 25, 2015

(BEDFORD) - Lawrence County Sheriff Mike Branham says one of his officers will be honored for his life-saving efforts.

On the morning of August 8, Sgt. Lonnie Johnson was having breakfast at Golden Corral. He had just paid for his meal and was rounding the corner when a couple of men yelled at him to help.

"There was a man on the floor," Sheriff Branham says. "Sgt. Johnson immediately checked the man for a pulse and to see if he was breathing. The man was not breathing and there was no heartbeat."

Sgt. Johnson began performing CPR, while fellow officer Jim Sloan ran to the police car to retrieve a CPR assist device.

The man began breathing again and was rushed to the hospital.

"He had suffered a heart attack," Sheriff Branham says. "The quick action of Sgt. Johnson may have saved the man's life. Sgt. Johnson did what any one of us would have done."

Sheriff Branham says Johnson will be receiving a commendation for his quick life-saving actions.
