(UNDATED) - Based on numbers generated through AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report, statewide gas prices, on average, have increased more in Indiana than in any other state during the last seven days.
In fact, Hoosiers are now paying $2.96 for self-serve regular unleaded, a 59-cent increase since last week. Similar price surges have occurred in neighboring states as well. Illinois is up 56 cents, Michigan is up 51 cents, Ohio is up 44 cents and Wisconsin is up 39 cents.
Dramatic price increases throughout the Great Lakes Region are being attributed to a major refinery issue at BP's Whiting, IN facility, where according to BP, the largest of three crude oil distillation units was unexpectedly shut down on August 8 for unscheduled repair work.
Reports indicate the Whiting refinery is capable of producing 430,000 barrels of refined product per day.
At $2.96 per gallon, Hoosiers are now paying the 9th most expensive gas prices in the country.
The current nationwide average for self-serve regular gas is $2.67.
