(DUBOIS CO.) - Dubois County Sheriff Donny Lampert is furious over the council’s decision to increase the community corrections director’s salary by $5,000.
WTIZ reports that William Wells was chosen by the Community Corrections Advisory Board in June to be the new Director, but it came with a request to maintain his current income of $54,680 as Director of the Drug Court program.
In their last meeting, the council defeated the request by Advisory Board chairman, Judge Mark McConnell, to appoint Wells to the position and make the appropriation.
This month, with more clarification from Judge Mark McConnell and appearances by Judge William Weikert and Judge Nathan Verkamp, the council voted 4 to 3 to appoint Wells to the position and make the appropriation.
The Dubois County Free Press reports that Sheriff Lampert left the room after the vote, but returned to unleash on the council saying he was "ticked off" and that the action the council just took flied in the face of other employees who have been with the department for up to 20 years with no increase in pay similar to Wells.
Sheriff Lampert says the action was an injustice to the other department heads and county employees granting this size pay raise. Lampert continued by saying that his chief deputy doesn't make $50,000.
Lampert also praised the work of Interim Director Jenny Fuhs, who stepped in when the former Director resigned and how she didn't get due consideration for the position.
During his tirade, Lampert told the council that he would be resubmitting his own department's budget to the council as he stormed out of the room.
