(SALEM) - The death of a Salem man has been ruled accidental.
According to Salem Police Detective Scott Ratts, 86-year-old Milton "Cap" Nichols died at his home from a single gunshot wound to the chest from a .22-caliber rifle.
Police received a 911 call at 5:46 p.m. Monday reporting the incident and rushed to 1101 South Jackson Street. When rescue crews arrived a minute later, Nichols was dead.
Police say Nichols was moving items around in an out building and when he moved the gun it discharged. Police have ruled out suicide because of where the wound was and that Nichols had staggered out of the building in an attempt to get help.
Nichols was a long-time janitor at Salem Community Schools.
