(WASHINGTON) - The body of a man was recovered from a fire just north of Washington.

According to the Daviess County Sheriff's Department, officials were notified about the camping trailer fire at 1800 North County Road 100 West around 11:10 a.m. Wednesday after two men on their way to lunch spotted the fire.

The camper was sitting on property owned by Robert Clark.

Daviess County Chief Deputy Gary Allison says that police are currently treating the incident as a homicide.

The men attempted to get into the home to alert anyone inside of the fire, but the door was locked. They were able to finally get inside and found a man, but there was nothing they could do to help him as he had passed away.

Washington Township Volunteer firefighters and sheriff's deputies responded to the scene but were not able to get to the victim because the 28-foot camper was engulfed in flames.

Allison says firefighters were able to get the blaze under control but by that time all that remained was the metal shell. They were then able to recover the body.

An investigator from the state fire marshal's office and the Daviess County Coroner have joined the Daviess County Sheriff's Department and the Washington Township VFD in investigation what happened to the victim and how the fire started.

Officials have not been able to positively identify the victim. An autopsy will be performed and officials hope to have more answers then.
