(BEDFORD) - A Bedford man was arrested after police had to be physically pulled off a woman he was beating.

According to Bedford Police Chief Dennis Parsley, officers were called to a home at the corner of 24th and J streets at 8:56 p.m. Wednesday after a neighbor heard a woman screaming for help and others yelling.

When police arrived they found a girl outside crying and screaming that her mother was being attacked inside the home.

"Officers found the front door locked and heard the woman screaming for help," Parsley says.

An officer forced open the door and found 32-year-old Christopher Turpin of Bedford beating on a woman who was crouched on the floor covering her face with her arms.

"The woman was covered with blood and Mr. Turpin also had her blood all over him," Parsley added. "He was ordered to back away from the woman and refused. Officers had to forcibly pull him off the woman."

Parsley says the incident started with an argument that turned physical.

The woman's 10-year-old son attempted to help his mother and stop Turpin from hitting her.

"Mr. Turpin allegedly grabbed the boy, picking him off the ground and physically threw him onto a couch," Parsley says.

The woman suffered a large laceration over her right eye in addition to other injuries. She was taken by an IU ambulance and was treated and released.

Both Turpin and the woman were arrested on Saturday, August 18 after police were called to the home after a domestic fight and found the two intoxicated.
