(BEDFORD) - A one-vehicle accident Monday evening injured three people, including a 9-month-old baby.

According to a Lawrence County Police report, 27-year-old Levi Brazell of Springville was driving a 2000 Ford Explorer down a hill with a curve on Peerless Road near Bud Ikerd Road when the brakes on the Explorer failed.

Brazzel told police he attempted to use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle, but it didn't work. He then place the vehicle in park to try and slow down, but the Explorer continued to travel down the hill, going off the left edge of the road.

Brazzel told police he was able to get the Explorer back onto the road but it skidded to the right, rolling onto its side, and then skidded toward the bottom of the hill.

The Explorer struck a guardrail on the right side of the road, went over an embankment and flipped onto its top.

Brazzel, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered bruising to his entire body, but refused medical treatment.

30-year-old Brandi Smith of Springville was unrestrained, and was sitting in the back seat breastfeeding her 9-month-old son Wulfrec Brazzel, who was restrained in a car seat.

Smith was thrown from the rear of the Explorer, suffering fractures or dislocated her neck. The baby suffered a head injury.

A landing zone was set up at Dive Church, and the two were taken there to meet helicopters to be flown to Indianapolis hospitals.

The baby was flown to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, and Smith was flown to Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis.

Assisting at the scene were Seals ambulance crews, Air Evac medical helicopters, the Bedford Fire Department extrication team and Marshall, Shawswick, Indian Creek and Oolitic Volunteer Fire Departments.
