(BEDFORD) - The Lawrence County Drug Task Force arrested four people Tuesday morning after they learned that one man was wanted on a warrant for possession of heroin.

According to Sheriff Mike Branham, officers went to a home at 345 S Street in Bedford looking for 45-year-old Michael Hite.

Officers saw Hite at the home and also found 29-year-old Derek Gipson, of 57 Valley Lane, getting into a vehicle and leaving the home.

"Knowing that Gipson was wanted on a warrant and was never licensed, the task force contacted officers from the city and county who were able to get him stopped," Sheriff Branham wrote in an email. "Derek had no license and a warrant for his arrest."

In the meantime, other officers went to the S Street home, where the homeowner allowed officers to search the residence.

Officers found 40-year-old Charles Riggs, 37-year-old Shirley Patterson, and 30-year-old Rebecca Nunn, inside. They found Hite hiding in the home.

Officers also discovered syringes and cooking spoon and a small amount of heroin, 0.1 grams, in the living room.

"And approximately 0.1 grams of heroin was found in the immediate possession of Shirley Patterson," Branham added.

Police arrested Nunn, of 513 Skyline Dr., and Riggs, of Mitchell, and Patterson, of 225 Standish Steel Rd., on charges of possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia, assisting a criminal and visiting a common nuisance. They were charged with assisting a criminal after closing and locking the door when officers were obtaining consent to search.
They did so knowing that Michael Hite was wanted on a warrant.

Patterson is also facing a charge of possession of a legend drug.

Hite was arrested on a warrant for possession of heroin, a new charge of possession of heroin, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a common nuisance.

Gipson was taken to jail on a warrant for failure to appear and for driving a vehicle while never licensed.
