According to the Salem Police Department, officers were called to Luke's Tavern on West Mulberry Street at 9:45 p.m. after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle in front of the bar.

Witness statements report that 48-year-old Gregory Lee Shell of Salem had just left Luke's Tavern and was walking south across West Mulberry Street when he was struck by a vehicle.

Shell died at the scene.
