(BEDFORD) - The City of Bedford will be replacing a water line along 16th Street. The Board of Works awarded the project to Infrastructure Systems Inc. out of Orleans.

The project will cost $1,174,169. The money will come from a bond anticipation note of $5.5 million which was sold for this project and other waterworks improvements. As existing debts are paid off, the city will issue new bonds to repay the note. Payments will be made from sewer and water bills, but customers will not see a rate increase.

According to Director of Bedford Utilities Misty Adams, the current 12-inch water main under 16th Street has had several breaks and leaks in recent years. Just this month there were three breaks in the line that caused boil orders for residents and businesses on the west side of Bedford.

The new line will be installed along the south side of 16th Street and not under it. The line will be laid with a boring technique. Crews will bore a series of holes and then extend the line from one hole to another. Water service will not be affected. The work should not cause any traffic issues on 16th Street.

The new line will begin near Plaza Drive and travel west to Enterprise Rent-A-Car to the east. Adams says it will go under the pavement and extend along the north side of 16th from about Hillcrest Road to just east of Poplar Street.

Adams says once the new line is up and running, a filler material will be pumped into the old line to keep it from collapsing under the street.
