(MEDORA) - Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating an ATV accident that occurred late Friday night in Jackson County.
Police say 27-year-old Zachary Bowers of Medora was unconscious and was flown by helicopter to St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis with multiple injuries after apparently striking a dog in the roadway.
Just before 11:30 p.m. a motorist found Bowers face-down on County Road 825 West near Curry Road. An Indiana Conservation Officer arrived shortly afterward and discovered Bowers' ATV over an embankment.
Police say Bowers struck and killed a dog in the roadway before flipping his ATV multiple times. Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor; toxicology results are pending.
Bowers was not wearing a helmet or any safety equipment.
Assisting agencies at the scene included the Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Jackson County Medic 6, and Carr Township Fire Department. The incident remains under investigation by Indiana Conservation Officers.
Indiana Conservation Officers strongly encourage riders to always wear a helmet and necessary safety equipment when operating an ATV.
