Man Arrested For OWI, Had Children In Car

Last updated on Tuesday, July 21, 2015

(WASHINGTON) - A Vincennes man was arrested late Saturday evening after Indiana State troopers found him to be driving impaired with his two children in the car.

At 10:14 p.m. Saturday, Senior Trooper Jarrod Lents was patrolling State Road 57 in Washington, and had stopped behind a white 2002 Nissan Altima at the traffic light at National Highway. As the traffic light turned green, the Nissan, which was supposed to go straight or turn right, proceeded to turn left and travel west on National Highway. Trooper Lents activated his emergency lights, attempting to initiate a traffic stop on the Nissan. The vehicle continued driving until it turned onto Southeast 1st Street, at which point it drove over a curb and into the grass.

Trooper Lents identified the driver as 38-year-old Mauro Coatzonon Teoba of Vincennes. Teoba's two children, a 10-year-old son and a 6-month-old daughter, were both in the back seat of the Nissan, while a case of beer was in the front seat floorboard with a front seat passenger. Further investigation found that Teoba had a blood alcohol content of 0.14%. Teoba was lodged, without incident, at the Daviess County Security Center. The children were released to their mother, who was in the back seat of the car at the time of the stop.

Teoba is facing felony charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with minor passengers and two felony counts of neglect of a dependant.

Trooper Lents was assisted at the scene by the Washington Police Department, and at the jail by Indiana Conservation Officers, who provided translation assistance.
