Jackson Co. Utilities Using Loan To Pay For Improvements, Customers Will See Rate Increase

Last updated on Monday, July 27, 2015

(JACKSON CO.) - Jackson County Water Utility is using a low-interest loan of nearly $5 million, paid for by a recent rate increase, to replace aging water mains and make other improvements to its system that serves more than 5,500 customers.

General Manager Larry McIntosh says, while customers might not notice many changes, there should be fewer outages in the four areas where 46,000 feet of water mains will be or have been replaced.

The company will repay the loan through a rate increase. Customers who use a thousand gallons of water will now pay $9.80 a month instead of $9.22. Another rate increase, to pay for rising operating expenses, is pending with the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. If approved, that increase would raise the cost to $10.66 per month or another 86 cents at the beginning of 2016.
