(BLOOMINGTON) - Indiana Department of Transportation officials are confident that Section 4 of I-69 will be open to traffic in five months, weather permitting.
INDOT Spokesman Will Wingfield says despite the rain, the project is on target to be completed by the end of the year.
That might be hard to believe seeing as the Ind. 37 and I-69 interchange in southern Monroe County is still a dirt path. The other end of the 27-mile section near Naval Support Activity Crane has about 4.5 miles of smooth concrete but ends in dirt.
But Wingfield says all embankment work will be done and paving will begin within the next month.
With clear skies, crews can pave about 1,500 feet of highway per day. E B Paving was pouring about 250 cubic yards of concrete per hour last week. Steve Fox, paving superintendent, said the process starts at E B's portable mixing site off Oard Road in Bloomington.
While the concrete pouring seems to be going smoothly, drivers will still see contractors working when they travel on I-69 between Evansville and Bloomington once Section 4 opens.
Wingfield says even though the interstate will be open to traffic there is still more work to do.
Contractors will be doing erosion control work and cleaning up the area.
