Hoosier Hills Food Bank Take Part in "Day of Giving" Initiative

Last updated on Friday, July 3, 2015

Local effort dovetails with the greatest national shortage of non-perishable food items, which occurs during summer when children in need are out of school.

Bloomington, IN June 26, 2015 -- Each summer, food banks across the country, including those in the Bloomington area, are usually at their lowest levels, meaning that those children who typically rely on school lunches are going without meals. With that in mind, Bloomington's Travel Leaders is today announcing it will join with travel agencies throughout the United States on July 9 for the 3rd Annual Travel Leaders Group Day of Giving by serving as a point of collection for needed food items that will be donated to Hoosier Hills Food Bank, which is a local charitable food bank. Bloomington residents are invited to drop off non-perishable food items now through July 9 at Travel Leaders located at 814 S. Walnut St. "Hunger is a pervasive issue that knows no boundaries, including here in Bloomington. In fact, one in six people in the United States struggles with hunger," explained Debbie Isom, Manager of the area Travel Leaders. "Because Travel Leaders believes in giving back to the local community, we are joining with others nationally in a 'Day of Giving' that not only raises awareness, but takes action to combat hunger through donating much-needed food items." Isom noted that boxed and canned items will be accepted at the Travel Leaders location until July 9. At that time, all collected items will then be counted and donated to Hoosier Hills Food Bank. Additionally, Travel Leaders is encouraging clients to contribute to Feeding America - the nationally-recognized 501(c)(3) umbrella organization for food banks throughout the United States. Travel Leaders Group is pledging to match up to the first $5,000 in donations to Feeding America. Isom said that last year's Travel Leaders Group Day of Giving yielded 3.67 tons of groceries, nearly 700 volunteer hours and approximately $50,000 in donations. Travel Better.
