(BEDFORD) - William Deckard of Deckard Construction LLC has committed to building a multi-level wooden ramp for Morgan Roe.
"I always try to give back to people," says Jim Deckard. "Like they say, pay it forward. Everyone needs a hand every now and then."
Morgan, the daughter of Dotti Roe, suffers from cerebral palsy and will have to undergo several surgeries in the near future.
"I am both humbled to my knees and jumping for joy!" Dotti says. "Mr. Deckard is a guardian angel who appeared with a solution. We will still need to build steps at the front door, replace or repair the current hillside steps and do some repairs on the courtyard area but all that is so much less overwhelming and do-able now! And having a good ramp means that when we do start work on the steps, we will still be able to get in and out of the house, so this gift is so meaningful and so wonderful in so many ways! We will be able to get Morgan in and out of the house during her treatments."
Morgan has started working with a new physical therapist and will be going 2-3 times a week, in addition to working out daily at home.
"However, the doctors feel there is a possibility that no matter how much PT or how good the orthopedic device, she may have already achieved maximum stretch - the tendon will only give so much," Dotti wrote on Morgan's Facebook page. "So we will be consulting with the surgeon as soon as possible to learn more about the procedure and go ahead and get that on the calendar."
Morgan will be wearing hinged braces around the clock which will cause her a great deal of pain, her mother says.
"They will have to be adjusted often, to force her foot upward and hold it there," Dotti added. "She may do a series of Botox injections and hard casting after that, where they loosen the tendon and muscle with the Botox and then adjust the feet and cast them for 5-8 weeks,then repeat the procedure until the correct position is achieved."
It might not work.
Dotti says surgery is the only way to fix it permanently, and without it Morgan will be required to wear the braces for the rest of her life.
Although she still has to wear the braces, Morgan has been given a partial scholarship to attend the East Tennessee Unschooled Summer Camp in August so she can have a fun week with her peers before undergoing the casting and surgery.
Medical costs are adding up, and the family has not met their insurance deductible. The family has no clue yet on how much the braces and surgery will cost.
"It's overwhelming," Dotti says. "The medical costs are already adding up as well and we are nowhere near meeting the deductible."
